Mission & Outreach

The Mission program at First Baptist Church is alive with enthusiasm.  We are dedicated to a broad outreach, supporting over 50 local, national and foreign missions.  A portion of the mission budget is directed toward the American Baptist Church basic mission program and we support the four special offerings of the American Baptist Churches of the USA.  Hands-on mission projects include Teddy Bear Sunday to benefit children in a local shelter and the Living Market supporting Heifer International.

Financial contributions are received from pledged and budgeted money as well as donated funds and fundraisers.  Special ongoing collections include grocery items for the food pantry at Eliot Church in Roxbury, a coin jug which helps support Grace and Hope Mission in Boston, aluminum can flip tops for Shriners’ Hospital to aid in the purchase of medical equipment, and travel size toiletries which are donated to Bristol Lodge and Sandra’s Lodge.

An annual Fall Mission Fair provides the opportunity for learning about a few of the local missions that First Baptist Church supports. It is held the last Sunday in September.

Our special mission project since 2004 has been support of a school in the Garden District, Zambia. This project is part of Community Without Borders. Children who have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic primarily attend this school. The school provides them with a safe place to spend the day, a lunch and some education. A donation of $50 is all that is needed for one child to attend for a year.  In 2005, the church provided money to help purchase a new building for the school.
