Christian Learning Center
of Lexington
The Christian
Learning Center of Lexington is an educational program open to
adults and teens in Lexington and surrounding communities. The goal
of the program is to provide a forum to study the Bible in a
relaxed, supportive group setting. Whether you are exploring the
Bible for the first time or have read it all of your life, you can
benefit from the programs. Emphasis is put on learning how the
Biblical lessons can be applied to our daily life. Courses are
taught by Lexington First Baptist ministerial staff and guest
lecturers. The courses are free except for suggested donations for
dinner or course materials.
2007-2008 Series
"The
Spiritual Heart of Your Health"
A Nine Month Bible Study
Of
Healing
Stories of Jesus
We invite you to join us on a personal as well as a
communal journey of wellness in the context of Jesus’ invitation to
us as followers to “teach, preach and heal”. As we study, pray and
share, we hope to explore the multi-faceted meanings of this
oft-used, misunderstood concept of HEALING.
Martin Luther said, "This life, therefore, is not
godliness, but the process of becoming godly, not health, but
getting well, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are
not now what we shall be, but we are on the way." In this context,
we believe we are works in progress.
HEALING is defined in this context to mean the process of
integrating the body, mind, & spirit to achieve wholeness, health,
and a sense of well being, even when the curing of disease may not
occur.
This Bible Study series will help participants to be
more whole and complete than we could ever be without the gift of
grace from God. We should be better able to establish a way of life
that is conductive to wholeness and health.
This Bible Study is designed so you can benefit by
attending only one session, multiple sessions or all of the
sessions. Come when you can or when the topic sounds interesting.
Come join
us on Wednesday evenings for fellowship, biblical reflection,
learning and lively discussion.
You can learn
from 30 Biblical stories what Jesus taught about healing as we study
and ponder the Gospel message.
This Bible
Study is another means to learn, understand, and apply Christ's
teachings to our lives and at the same time note how he dealt with
the whole person in his ministry.
This Bible
Study is designed so you can attend only one evening or every
evening or anything in between. Each evening study is a self
contained study.
We will be using the text entitled “The Spiritual Heart of Your
Health” - A devotional guide on the healing stories of Jesus,
written by James K. Wagner. This text can be purchased for $12 or
you can use extra copies that will be available each evening.

The
Dead Are Raised
Witnessing the funeral procession of a widow’s only son, Jesus
was moved to compassion. Another time, when Jesus arrived at the
tomb of a good friend who had been dead four days, he was moved to
tears. Come and meet Jesus the man.

Large Crowds Follow Jesus
Some people feel uncomfortable and even guilty for going to God
repeatedly for help. Jesus seemed to never turn anyone away. No
human need was too small. No problem was unsolvable and no sickness
was incurable. Come this evening, bring your concerns and needs.
Jesus will not turn you away.

Healing -the Name of Jesus
As a follower of Jesus, would you be willing to be “sent out”
into your world to help and heal the sick? Seventy-two of his
followers in this healing story were sent out. When they returned
they had fantastic news to share with Jesus. Come this evening to
find out what they discovered.

Betsy McGovern
1960-2006
Betsy was an active member of First Baptist
Lexington. While still a young wife and mother, she died of cancer
after putting up a strong fight to survive. Before her strength
diminished, Betsy attended a Healing Prayer Service in Connecticut.
Before her death, she received healing touch and prayer from her
many friends and family members. This seemed to help her cope with
her illness and prepare her and her family for her death.
Betsy received healing relationally, spiritually and emotionally
during her last days. Even as she was dying she said that God was
healing her. She strongly urged our church to have a healing
ministry and would definitely be involved if she had lived.
Additional Adult Classes
Bible Study
"Adults Exploring the Bible Together" – is a 45
minute interactive session that is held in the church library before
Sunday Worship from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. This year we are exploring
Romans covering roughly one chapter per week. We participate in reading the chapter to start the session and then a
series of questions provided by the facilitator stimulate
discussions.
We always end
with a discussion on how this can be applied to our daily lives. We
welcome people to join us for one Sunday or on a regular basis.
Typically this is a group where many of our new members and friends
first join in and participate. The group will meet starting on
Sunday, September 16, 2007 and continue throughout the year.
Faith-based Wellness Group
“Quiet Your
Mind and Hear God” – this is a new Sunday Morning Group. This is a
faith-based wellness approach to reading the Bible. Each week we
will read, meditate and respond to a selected scripture on the theme
of Forgiveness. Starting with an introductory session on September
16th, meeting from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. in room 103. The eight week
session will begin on September 23th.
